In the past five years, interest in the effects of diet on blood pressure has risen rapidly as a result of the increased understanding of some of the physiological mechanisms that underlie the increase in blood pressure. Although there are many potential mechanisms by which dietary salt intake contributes to the development of hypertension, there is evidence that both sodium chloride and potassium chloride are effective in increasing blood pressure under certain conditions. 

Losing weight can be a challenge for many people, especially those who are overweight or obese. A small decrease in body weight can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels by improving insulin sensitivity. Achieving a healthy body weight may also lower the risk of some cancers, diabetes, and metabolic diseases, and improve sleep. The link between weight loss and blood pressure is one of the strongest in medicine.

“Blood pressure” is the force exerted by the blood on the walls of the blood vessels, and the higher the blood pressure, the worse the damage to the blood vessels caused by the blood. “Weight loss” is the mass of the blood that has been forced out of the vessels and into the lungs. “Weight loss”, therefore, is a measure of the damage to the blood vessels caused by the blood. Thus, blood pressure can be viewed as the “stress” on the arteries, whereas “weight loss” is the amount of “strain” on the arteries.

A study examined the association between weight loss and blood pressure reduction in obese adults. The participants were randomly assigned to three groups; a) a behavioral weight loss group; b) a behavioral weight loss group supplemented with orlistat, a prescription weight loss agent known to cause weight loss by limiting dietary fat; and c) a placebo group. Both groups assigned to behavioral weight loss lost significantly more weight than the placebo group. Both groups assigned to behavioral weight loss plus orlistat lost significantly more weight than the placebo group, and also significantly more weight than the behavioral weight loss group.
