weight loss vs inch loss
I was an avid exerciser and had been exercising for about four years with no results. My weight was constant, so I decided to see if I could lose inches, which is how I really wanted to lose weight. The first thing I tried was a 12-week plan of “dieting”. I went on a liquid fast diet of water and green drinks.
A study published recently in the British medical journal the Lancet by an international team of scientists showed that two weight loss methods, bariatric surgery, and lifestyle change, work differently. The results showed that for people who had bariatric surgery, the weight loss was achieved predominantly by reducing fat mass while for those who had adopted a lifestyle change, the weight loss was achieved predominantly by reducing the amount of food consumed. The average weight loss for those who had undergone bariatric surgery was 40 kg, but only 6 kg for those who had adopted lifestyle change. The difference in weight loss was due to the fact that the weight loss from bariatric surgery was accompanied by a substantial reduction in the size of the stomach.
I had a lot of weight to lose and tried to think of the best way to help myself. Should I focus on weight or inches? Would focusing on inches really help me lose weight? I decided to spend a week focusing on the inches.
Research studies show that while weight loss is more challenging and requires more focus, inch loss is faster and easier to achieve. Here, we explore what those studies suggest and whether the challenges and outcomes differ by weight loss approach.
