where weight loss happens first
the first step of weight loss is calorie (calorie) restriction. Calorie restriction results in increased energy expenditure, which leads to greater energy expenditure from physical activity. This is also known as the thermic effect of food (TEF). In contrast, calorie restriction has no effect on the thermic effect of a meal and physical activity, and hence there is no change in energy expenditure from physical activity.
A study published in this issue of the Journal of Nutrition by Dr. David Heber and colleagues looked at the effect of exercise on fat metabolism in obese adolescents with diabetes. They found that weight loss with exercise is most effective during the first year after the initiation of insulin therapy. After the first year, weight gain continued for the remainder of the study period, although exercise had no significant effect on the continued weight gain (Heber, 2007).
The brain’s hypothalamus (H) controls the pituitary gland (P) which controls the production and release of hormones. When P secrete growth hormone (GH) the body begins to use proteins, carbohydrates, and fats for energy. Fat is the main source of energy for the brain, and body fat cells, called adipocytes, store energy. When adipocytes accumulate in large quantities, the body may start to use adipose tissue as a storage depot for calories.
A recent study by the US National Institutes of Health found that people are more likely to lose weight when they feel like they can be heard, and that overweight people are less likely to lose weight with an attitude of ‘I can’t help it, I’m just fat.’ (Baker, 2005) People who are overweight are more likely to be able to explain why they are obese than people who are not overweight. They are more likely to consider what they could do to change their situation before making a decision to be or not be fat. This is because someone who is overweight sees the problem as being more within their control.
Many diets and weight loss programs focus on the loss of weight quickly. This usually happens because the diet is unsustainable. If the weight is not lost quickly, and the amount of calorie intake is higher than the amount of energy expended (from physical activity), the weight will gain in the long term. In the long term, the weight will be more than what was lost, and the diet will not be sustainable.
