A recent study by University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center researchers showed that people who took weight-loss pills and dietary supplements experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure during the study. The participants were assigned to either a group that took a weight-loss drug, or a group that took a weight-loss drug, along with a natural supplement. Both groups lost weight throughout the study, but the group that took the drug and supplement had lower blood pressure compared to the group that only took the drugs. The supplement contains inulin, which is a type of fiber found in onions and garlic.
“Frequently, I think of the weight I lost and I feel the blood pressure,” says Jennifer Raskin, a registered nurse from Philadelphia who has struggled with high blood pressure. “It’s so easy to think that if I lose more weight, then I’ll have less pressure. But I’ve been on medication for a long time and nothing has helped. I’ve had a friend who had bariatric surgery, and I’m so curious about what that was like for her,” she adds. “
There are many different ways to view health, but one of the most important is the body/mind connection. That is, a good diet and exercise can help relieve stress, which in turn helps reduce weight and, therefore, lowers blood pressure. This is common knowledge, but sometimes hard to execute. On average, if a person eats a healthy diet and exercises regularly, they will see a decrease in blood pressure.
There are many popular weight loss products available, and they all promise to lower blood pressure. By weight loss, I’m referring to losing weight, and not to the dieting or calorie-counting done during the first and second phases of a weight loss program. As far as weight loss products are available, there are two main types: stimulants and diet pills. Both types have their pros and cons.
I’m often asked why I got interested in nutrition. Like many people, I was eating the foods I was told to eat to be healthy and maintain my weight, and I didn’t feel very good. It wasn’t until I heard about the low-carb, high-fat diet that I began to wonder about the effect it might have on my weight and overall health. This led me to learn more about nutrition, and I found that low-carb, high-fat diets are both much more effective for people who are trying to lose weight, and more effective for the long term, compared to diets that are high in grains and carbohydrates.
