In a clinical setting, diet is always a part of weight loss. But for reasons that are unclear, the clinical literature on obesity is a black hole. No one cares about weight loss, it seems, unless you're trying to lose weight. The same is true of obesity.

In a clinical study, a diet high in protein, fiber, and fat, with moderate amounts of carbohydrates and some complex carbohydrates, was found to be most effective at reducing the overall calories in a diet. Calorie reduction was associated with weight loss, while the intake of too many simple carbs led to weight gain. A high protein intake is also important for bone health, and a high intake of protein is a good strategy to maintain lean muscle mass. As a matter of fact, there is a good reason we have so much information about the Renaissance. We have so much information because it was a time rife with scientific experimentation. A great deal of the experimentation happened in Italy, but other places in Europe participated in significant numbers. For example, the British Isles were a hotbed of scientific experimentation.

It was a time of growing self-consciousness when people began to ponder how they and their contemporaries fitted into the scheme of things. The Romantic philosophers and poets turned to the past to find the seeds of ideas they believed would be relevant to the modern era.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Europeans discovered how to lose weight while keeping the weight off. In 1742, doctors in Paris began to prescribe a diet that was rich in carbohydrates and lean meat, and limited in fat, to their patients who were trying to lose weight. In 1752, when an Englishman named Edward Smith, after receiving a medical degree in Paris, decided he wanted to be an “excellent physician,” he read about the French diet and tried it out for himself. He discovered that it worked; he lost about forty pounds and kept it off.
